The random fiber laser (RFL) has been an excellent platform for exploring novel optical dynamics and developing new functional optoelectronic devices. However, it is challenging for RFLs to regulate their emission into regular narrow pulses due to their intrinsic randomness. Here, through engineering the laser configuration (cavity Q value, gain distribution and nonlinearity), we demonstrate that narrow (~2.5 ns) pulses with record peak power as high as 64.3 kW are achieved from a self-Q-switched random ytterbium fiber laser. Based on high intracavity intensity and efficient interplay of multiple nonlinear processes (stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman scattering and four-wave mixing), an over-one-octave visible-near-infrared (NIR) Raman-frequency comb is generated from single-mode silica fibers for the first time. After spectrally filtering the Raman peaks, wavelength-tunable pulses with durations of several hundreds of picoseconds are obtained. Such a high-peak-power random Q-switched fiber laser and wide frequency comb in the visible-NIR region can find applications in diverse areas, such as spectroscopy, biomedical imaging and quantum information.

高重频大脉冲能量激光在基础科学研究以及通信、探测、材料加工等应用领域具有重要价值。报道了溶液法制备的过渡金属二硫化物NbSe2纳米颗粒材料的线性和非线性光学特性,并利用其2 μm波段可饱和吸收特性对掺铥光纤激光器进行被动调制实现了2 μm锁模激光输出。线性测量发现NbSe2纳米材料的光学吸收覆盖近红外到近中红外波段且随波长增加而降低;非线性光学测量显示NbSe2纳米材料在2 μm波段的调制深度为6.5%、饱和强度为19 MW·cm?2。然后我们把NbSe2纳米材料转移到金镜上制作成可饱和吸收器件,并对掺铥光纤激光器进行调制得到2 μm耗散孤子谐波锁模激光,单脉冲能量为3.36 nJ,脉冲宽度为1.48 ns,重复频率为50.66 MHz。激光光谱的中心波长为1 910.8 nm,光谱宽度为5.8 nm。首次在2 μm光纤激光器中采用NbSe2纳米颗粒实现耗散孤子锁模,证明了NbSe2纳米材料在2 μm波段的非线性光学调制能力,结合纳米颗粒的可集成特性,溶液法制备的NbSe2纳米材料有望成为一种新型的宽谱非线性光电调制材料/器件。

We briefly review the development of gain-switched rare-earth-doped fiber lasers and their applications in wavelength conversion to mid-IR, supercontinuum generation, and medicine in recent years. We illustrate the similarities between gain-switching and Q-switching techniques that will provide tools for the design and optimization of the gain-switched fiber lasers. From the nature of the gain-switched fiber lasers, benefits of this kind of lasers to 2-μm region and in-band-pumped (two-level system) laser systems are obvious. Advantages of in-band-pumped 2-μm lasers are discussed and analyzed with a simple numerical simulation in terms of Tm-doped fiber lasers. We also propose the key factors in the development of the gain-switched fiber lasers and predict the future tendency.

利用国内生长的Tm:YLF晶体实现了在波长1910 nm处高重复频率、短脉宽激光种子输出。晶体尺寸为1.5 mm×6 mm×20 mm,掺杂原子数分数为2%。在腔长为90 mm条件下,采用不同透射率(T)和曲率半径(R)的输出镜,测得在T=10%,R=250 mm时输出激光的斜率效率最高,为25.6%。利用高功率掺铥光纤放大器,采用激光主振荡功率放大器(MOPA)方式,实现了脉冲激光放大。在抽运功率为100 W,重复频率为500 Hz时,得到峰值功率630 kW,单脉冲能量63 mJ的脉冲输出。

LiLuF4 single crystals co-doped with thulium (5%) and holmium (0.5%), having large size, intact shape, and high optical quality, are successfully grown by the Czochralski technique. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of the crystal are measured. The absorption spectrum shows that the main absorption band locates at near 686 and 792 nm and the °uorescence spectrum peaks at 2.05 \mu m. At room temperature, the as-grown Tm, Ho: LiLuF4 single crystals are end-pumped by a fiber-coupled laser diode system with pumping wavelength of 795 nm under CW operations. A power of 50 mw continuous laser output at 2.05 \mu m wavelength is achieved. Meanwhile an obvious green light is detected.

Cr2+:ZnSe具有很宽的吸收带和发射带,是中红外波段优秀的可调谐激光材料。从吸收光谱、发射光谱以及角度调谐输出对Cr2+:ZnSe晶体的激光输出性能进行了研究。采用真空高温扩散法制备Cr2+:ZnSe晶体,获得了高浓度的Cr2+离子掺杂的厚1.7 mm,直径10 mm的薄片ZnSe晶体。使用中心波长2.05 μm,最大输出功率8 W的Tm离子掺杂的光纤激光器抽运,使用平凹腔结构搭建谐振腔,获得了最大平均功率1.034 W,中心波长2.367 μm,线宽10 nm的连续激光输出。利用角度调谐的方法,对Cr:ZnSe晶体的调谐性能进行了研究,在100 nm范围内获得了调谐输出。

Watt-level short fiber lasers side-pumped through fiber-to-waveguide couplers are demonstrated. The fiber lasers are fabricated from Nd-doped phosphate glass with large numerical aperture of 0.2 and rectangular cross section of 1.5\times0.5 (mm). Single transverse mode output is achieved by the gain-guiding effect. Average power of 1 W is generated from a 4.0-cm-long fiber laser with a slope efficiency of 10%.

High-power operation of diode-pumped fiber lasers at wavelength near 2 μm are demonstrated with short length of heavily Tm3+-doped silica glass fibers. With 7-cm long fiber, a laser at near 2 μm is obtained with the threshold of 135 mW, maximum output power of 1.09 W, and slope efficiency of 9.6% with respect to the launched power from a laser diode at 790 nm. The output stability of this fiber laser is within 5%. The dependence of the performance of fiber lasers on the operation temperature and cavity configuration parameters is also investigated.
